On March 13, Magic of Persia held a private exhibition and auction at JAMM Art Gallery in Al Quoz. Entitled Remembering Tomorrow, the event was held in the presence of patron and keynote speaker HE Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development. A diverse range of contemporary Iranian art donated by emerging artists was showcased on the night. The top sale of the evening was a specially commissioned portrait by Shirin Neshat that sold for Dhs312,200. The piece, which will be a unique edition, will be a photograph taken by Neshat of what the purchaser wishes to have in 150 x 100 cm LE silver gelatin print.
Other top lots included a work by Nasser Ovissi, sold for Dhs113,861; a piece by Hadieh Shafie for Dhs62,440; a work by Khosrow Hassanzadeh for Dhs62,440; an artwork by Ali Akbar Sadeghi for Dhs36,729 and a photograph by Newsha Tavakolian for Dhs36,729.
The alternative venue for the event on a street in Al Quoz further emphasised Magic of Persia’s pioneering and avant-garde vision. The evening was accentuated and regally themed by Ali Bakhtiar Design. – Rebecca Anne Proctor
